Genesis: Book of faith; not science
Herb Lodder, facilitator

For many Christians it is impossible to accept the theory of evolution and other scientific insights of the last 125 years because they are contrary to the Biblical Book of Genesis.

It is exciting to know that people have only seen genes and chromosomes in the last century and are still learning about subatomic particles. Christians should not bury their heads in the sand because certain scientific discoveries and analysis contradict Genesis.  The people of Genesis could not be expected to know what we have only just discovered.

But the book of Genesis makes some faith statements that are still critical and relevant in our time – such things as creation is good, life is a gift from God, people tend to blame their greed and selfishness on others, we will lie to protect our complicity, and similar issues which have not changed over time.

Jesus: An evolution of understanding over the centuries
Allen Spicer and Ed Kenny, facilitators

Beginning with the initial understanding of Jesus as Rabbi in the First Century, participants will look at Jesus as he was understood over the span of the centuries. Other views of Jesus will include Jesus as a light of the Gentiles, Jesus’ lordship vs. the lordship of Caesar, Jesus in the Middle Ages, and Jesus as liberator.

*Spiritual Journey– Lenten practice to deepen our walk with Christ
Joe Rushton and Stephanie Yancy, facilitators

Christians view life as a spiritual journey – undertaken not alone, but with companions along the way. The three tools for the journey: prayer, study and action, are an essential piece of this Lenten study group.  Participants will be invited to look more closely at their own stories, specifically seeking out how they perceive God moving with them each step of the way. Over the course of the five sessions, we will examine the ways we encounter God, made known to us through Jesus Christ, in our day-to-day lives and learn how we can increase our awareness of God’s presence among us.

This session will also be offered on Wednesdays in Lent from 10-11 am at Holy Comforter.
