Not Today, Satan

But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother…

Psalm 131:2a

I had planned to write about the documentary from ICJS that I and a few others from Trinity watched last night at the Senator Theatre. I’ve decided not to do that. I’m glad I saw it, and I think it would be useful for others to watch it, which you can do for free here. I’m pretty sure, though, that I need more time to reflect and pray before I make any statements about it. I also think it will be wiser for us to discuss it in community than for me to spout off about it.

If you do watch it, it is imperative that you remember that a) the people in this film are Christians and we have to own that, b) they are God’s children and worthy of empathy, and c) they do not represent everyone who supports Donald Trump for president. Whatever your beliefs or opinions, you are likely to have strong emotions. Please consider not sharing your immediate reactions on social media. This world needs more light and less heat.

To that end, I encourage you to be a part of the weekly Holy Eucharist followed by Centering Prayer we will host on Thursdays at 12:30pm during Lent. That service will include healing prayers, laying on of hands, and anointing, and there will be a pause between Holy Eucharist and Centering prayer for those who prefer to do one and not the other. These two disciplines are among our many tools to stay rooted in Jesus and the work of the Gospel without being swept away by the world’s chaos. We have work to do, but let’s do it in faith, not frenzy.

In peace,
