The Rev. Kenneth H. Saunders III (“Ken”) became the 7th rector to serve Trinity Church on May 1, 2011. Prior to being called to Trinity, Ken served as rector of Christ Church in Cleveland, NC. He holds a Master of Divinity Degree from The University of the South; School of Theology in Sewanee, TN and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management from The University of North Carolina at Asheville. Ken is currently working on his final thesis for a Doctor of Ministry degree in Congregational Development at Bexley-Seabury Seminary Federation in Chicago, IL with a focus on human resource actions in the church (specifically the termination of lay employees).
Ken is a “cradle” Episcopalian with a diverse background. He graduated from Frederick Military Academy (once located in Portsmouth, VA) and attended The Citadel in Charleston, SC. In the secular world, after attending college, Ken was as a nuclear technician, specializing in health physics & radiological controls for 7 years and then spent 12 years consulting, restructuring, and setting up businesses for various corporate and private residential construction companies, specializing in construction with modular boxes.
As a lay person, Ken has served the church over the years in several capacities… as cantor, choir member, musician, lector, Lay Eucharistic Visitor, acolyte trainer & coordinator, catechist, teacher, youth group leader (J2A & Rite 13), vestry and finance committee member, and sacristan. While living and working in Asheville, North Carolina, Ken finally answered the call from God to the ordained ministry of the Episcopal Church that he had been struggling with most of his adult life.
As a priest, Ken served the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina as the coordinator for convention liturgies and on the liturgical commission. He was one of the co-chairs of the programs of the church committee, and he worked with the Fresh Start program.
In the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, Ken serves as a facilitator for the Safeguarding God’s People workshops (2012-current), the registrar of the Maryland Episcopal Clergy Association (2015), on the Diocesan Property Committee (2013-2016), and on the Property Committee at the Bishop Claggett Center (2013-2016). He also participates with the Towson Area Ministerial Association. With the National Church, Ken currently works with the General Board of Examining Chaplains on a question writing team for the General Ordination Exam.
Ken is married to Kelly Saunders and they have three children, Kent, Kyle, and Kaytlynn. Kelly is the Gifts Processor and Data Quality Control for CurePSP, a non-profit organization based in New York, NY. The oldest son, Kent, and his wife, Amy, live in Ohio. Kyle and his wife, Kara, live in Mooresville, and Kaytlynn and her husband Ben live in Lancaster, PA.
For exercise and physical and mental focus, Ken is a student of Tae Kwon Do. He also enjoys golf and the YMCA. Ken & Kelly enjoy traveling, and spending time with their three cats: Hemi, Holley, and Edelbrock.
